Stones & Pavers

Stuart Row Landscapes specializes in natural stone and paver installation for residential and commercial properties across Knoxville and East Tennessee. Stone is the most permanent material in any landscape — it grounds a design, ages beautifully, and connects an outdoor space to the geology of the region.

What We Install

  • Flagstone patios and terraces — irregular natural stone in Tennessee buff, bluestone, or imported varieties
  • Fieldstone features — locally sourced Tennessee fieldstone for walls, borders, and accents
  • Brick paver patios and walks — classic patterns including herringbone, basket weave, and running bond
  • Stone steps and landings — natural slab steps and mortared stone staircases
  • Dry-laid stone walls — traditional dry-stack construction without mortar
  • Stone borders and edging — clean transitions between lawn, garden, and hardscape
  • Boulders — specimen stones placed as landscape anchors and focal points

Natural Stone vs. Manufactured Pavers

Both have their place, and we work with both. Here’s how we help clients decide:

Choose natural stone when:

  • You want a timeless, organic aesthetic
  • Each piece should have unique character
  • The landscape style is naturalistic or traditional
  • Long-term patina and aging are desirable

Choose manufactured pavers when:

  • You want geometric precision and uniform color
  • The design is contemporary or formal
  • Budget is a primary constraint
  • You want a wide selection of colors and shapes

Our Stone Work Process

Stone installation is skilled craft work. The difference between a beautiful stone patio and a frustrating one comes down to the hands that lay it.

  1. Material selection — we source stone from regional quarries and select pieces for color consistency, thickness, and character
  2. Layout — dry-fitting the stone pattern before permanent installation, adjusting for natural variation
  3. Base preparation — compacted gravel sub-base graded for drainage, with sand or stone dust setting bed
  4. Installation — each stone hand-placed, leveled, and fitted. Joints consistent and properly filled
  5. Finishing — polymeric sand or stone dust joints, final cleaning, and sealing where appropriate

Why Tennessee Stone

East Tennessee has exceptional stone resources. Tennessee fieldstone, Crab Orchard stone, and locally quarried flagstone offer colors and textures that naturally complement the region’s architecture and landscape. Using regional stone also means lower transport costs and a material that already belongs in this environment.

Stuart Row has relationships with local quarries built over three decades. We know which sources produce the best material for specific applications — which stone splits cleanly, which weathers well, and which colors hold up over time.

Common Questions

What's the difference between natural stone and pavers?

+

Natural stone (flagstone, fieldstone, bluestone) is quarried and cut or left in natural shapes. Each piece is unique. Manufactured pavers are concrete products molded into uniform shapes and colors. Natural stone offers character and a timeless look. Pavers offer consistency and a wider range of geometric patterns. Both are excellent choices — it depends on the aesthetic you want.

Is natural stone more expensive than pavers?

+

Generally yes, both in material cost and installation labor — natural stone requires more skill to fit and lay properly. However, natural stone typically lasts longer, requires less maintenance, and ages more gracefully. For many homeowners, the long-term value and beauty of natural stone justify the upfront cost.

How do you handle drainage under stone patios?

+

Every stone patio we build starts with a properly graded and compacted gravel base that serves as both a structural foundation and a drainage layer. We slope the finished surface away from structures and ensure water has a clear path off the patio. In areas with heavy drainage, we integrate French drains or channel drains into the design.

Can stone be used on slopes?

+

Absolutely. Natural stone steps, terraced landings, and stone-edged paths are ideal for navigating slopes. Stone's weight and texture provide natural grip and stability. We design stairways and paths that follow the natural contour of the land, making slopes accessible and visually integrated with the landscape.
