Outdoor Living

Stuart Row Landscapes designs and builds outdoor living spaces for homeowners across Knoxville and East Tennessee. An outdoor living space isn’t just a patio with furniture — it’s an extension of your home, designed with the same care you’d give to any room you live in.

What We Create

  • Gathering patios — stone and paver terraces sized and shaped for how you actually entertain
  • Fire features — fire pits, fireplaces, and fire tables that extend your outdoor season into fall and winter
  • Covered structures — pergolas, pavilions, and arbors that provide shade and define outdoor rooms
  • Dining terraces — dedicated spaces for outdoor meals, positioned for evening light and views
  • Garden seating — quiet spots tucked into the landscape for reading, coffee, or just sitting
  • Integrated landscapes — plantings, lighting, and water features that make the living space feel immersed in the garden

Designing for Real Life

We start every outdoor living project with a simple question: how do you actually spend time outside?

Do you host large gatherings or prefer intimate dinners? Do your kids need room to run? Do you want a space that feels open to the yard or enclosed and private? The answers shape everything — from the size and position of the patio to the materials, the lighting, and what you see from your favorite seat.

More Than a Patio

The difference between a patio and an outdoor living space is design intention. A patio is a flat surface. An outdoor living space is a destination — with defined zones, comfortable scale, thoughtful materials, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay outside.

Stuart Row has been designing these spaces in East Tennessee for over 30 years. We understand how the afternoon sun tracks across a West Knoxville backyard, where to position a fire pit so smoke drifts away from seating, and which stone stays comfortable barefoot on a July evening.

Common Questions

What counts as an outdoor living space?

+

An outdoor living space is any part of your property designed for spending time outside — patios, covered porches, outdoor kitchens, fire pit areas, dining terraces, and garden seating areas. The goal is to extend your home's living space into the landscape, creating rooms that happen to have sky for a ceiling.

How do you design outdoor living spaces for Tennessee weather?

+

East Tennessee has a long outdoor season — roughly March through November. We design with shade structures and tree canopy placement for summer heat, covered areas for rain, and fire features to extend use into cooler months. Material choices also matter: we select stone and hardscape materials that handle freeze-thaw cycles and stay cool underfoot in summer.

Can you add an outdoor living space to an existing landscape?

+

Yes. Many of our projects involve adding a patio, fire feature, or kitchen to a property that already has established landscaping. We integrate new elements with existing plantings and structures so everything looks like it was designed together, even if it was built years apart.
